Why is toluene and formaldehyde used in nail polish?

and why do some people object to having those ingredients in nail polish?? and how is it related to animals?? thanks! Why is toluene and formaldehyde used in nail polish?
Objections to formaldehyde and toluene: both chemicals are suspected or actual cancer-causing agents.

They may be used because they help form a nice tough, shiny surface on the nail. Many people object to products that are tested on animals to determine their safety to humans.

Hope this helps. Why is toluene and formaldehyde used in nail polish?
Because it keeps the nail polish lasting longer and can extend the ';non chipping'; aspect. They are starting to make nail polishes from non toxic ingredients. Check with Sally Beauty Supply, also check Sally Hansen's website...I think their the ones who have started this.
It helps the polish dry faster and last longer. I believe the lab tries the polish out on animals before they test it on humans. Peta wrote an article about it once, if you want to check out their website. It doesn't come from animals, but it is harmful to animals and humans if ingested, so, if you like to bite your nails, you shouldn't paint them unless the polish doesn't contain these ingredients.
I don't know why they use it, but I know it is not good for you and it has most likely been tested on animals. I know Shaklee had a line of fingernail polish that did not include those, it was tested against OPI. There is still one color availabe till it is sold out. I think they are revamping the polish line. But the makeup is awesome also.
